Watauga 10-under’s Presley Wood scores a run in the second inning of Watauga’s 14-1 win over Hickory.

BOONE — The Watauga 10-under all-star softball team extended its season with a 14-1 victory over Hickory in the District 2 Tar Heel Softball All-Star Tournament held at Industrial Field.

Watauga finished in second place in the division, which earns the team a trip to the state tournament, which will be held in Currituck County. Wilkes Central beat Watauga 10-0 in the finals to win the division.

Watauga reached the finals by scoring three runs in the second inning and three more in the third inning. After claiming an 8-1 lead by adding two runs to its total in the fourth inning, Watauga scored six runs in the sixth inning to take a 14-1 lead.

Watauga finished with 13 hits against Hickory. Parker Clements, Presley Wood and Addelynn Honeycutt all finished with two hits.

Olivia Ray got Watauga’s offense going in the top of the second inning with a single. She scored on a Wood single, who scored on a Gwen May triple. May also scored in the inning to give Watauga a 3-0 lead.

Zoe Taxton singled and scored a run on a Faith Hagaman single. Clements drove in Hagaman with a single and scored on a fielder’s choice from Brenna Yates, which gave Watauga a 6-0 lead.

Hickory’s Harper Pyatte scored to pull her team to within 6-1, but Watauga, which was the visiting team on the scoreboard, added two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Wood reached base on an error and scored on a Honeycutt single to give Watauga a 7-1 lead.

Honeycutt scored on a May fielder’s choice to give Watauga an 8-1 advantage.

Watauga’s offense generated a big sixth inning that started with back-to-back singles by Clements and Yates, who drove in Clements. Olivia Ray reached base on an error, and Wood followed with a RBI single that drove in Yates.

Ray, Wood and Honeycutt, who also singled, all scored runs in the inning. Mackenzie Hayes added a single and scored a run in the inning. Brynn Slagle, who also singled in the inning, was stranded on second base as the inning ended.
