Shelby Hicks gets ready for the next Watauga player to bat after reaching first base as Wilkes first baseman Peyton Cockerham and right fielder Jaycee McGlammery also wait.

BOONE — Wilkes beat Watauga 17-6 in the finals of the 8-under Tar Heel League 2019 District Softball Tournament played June 27 at Industrial Park Fields.

Watauga, by finishing second in the tournament, qualified for the state tournament.

Watauga scored four runs in the first inning and two in the second. Shelby Hicks reached base and scored a run in the bottom of the first.

Allie Ellis, Avonlea Piper and Sydney Herman also scored in the inning and Kennedy Thompson reached third base before the inning was over.

Piper and Herman also scored runs in the fourth inning, while Eliana Braxton and Savana Costner also reached base for Watauga.

Wilkes got a big day from lead-off batter Sophia Gilbert, who scored three runs. Wilkes scored a single run in each of the first two innings and scored five in the third. Wilkes added five runs in the fourth inning and closed out the game with five runs in the fifth inning.
