Sliding into second base

BOONE — The Watauga All-Stars beat Ashe County 6-5 in the Will Dicus Memorial Tournament 10-under division.

Watauga scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning when Isaiah Denning and Grayson Coffey both scored on a Wyatt Luna single. Watauga added three runs in the third inning when Mason Tate and Evan Cutlip scored on an Andrew Noble single.

Noble also scored in the inning to give Watauga a 5-3 lead.

Coffey led off the fourth inning with a walk and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Tate. Watauga finished with six hits, including two by Luna.

Ashe scored its first two runs in the top of the second inning when Brett Jenkins drove in Owen Phipps and scored on a Zeke Golds RBI single.

Ashe added two runs in the top of the fifth inning when Golds drove in Jenkins and Parker Richardson, who both walked to reach base.

Ashe got a chance to extend the game into the sixth inning just 30 seconds before the game’s time limit ran out.

Ashe’s Adam Wagener and Levi Walters both reached base in the sixth inning, but Watauga pitcher Hayden Oakes struck out the next two Ashe batters to end the game.

Top-seeded Fungo Red Sox won the age division championship with a 26-8 win over Mitchell on June 16. Ashe got its revenge on Watauga with a 9-8 win and South Caldwell beat the High Country Havoc 8-3, also on June 16.

In other June 15 games, Fungo beat Watauga 13-0 and Caldwell County 13-2. Mitchell beat Caldwell 14-7 and beat the Havoc 9-4. Ashe also beat the Havoc 10-9.
