Jones gets first hit

Ryder Jones was released by the San Francisco Giants on July 21.

SAN FRANCISCO — Former Watauga standout infielder and pitcher Ryder Jones was released by the San Francisco Giants July 21.

Jones, who was the Giants’ second-round draft pick in 2013, spent most of his time in San Francisco injured. He suffered a knee injury late in 2018 that ended his season. He had surgery to repair the injury and has been trying to get back to the Giants this year.

Jones who is 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, has struggled from the plate at various levels of the minor leagues. This season, he was hitting .189 with just seven hits in 37 at-bats. In 58 career appearances with the Giants, Jones hit .184 with four home runs and eight RBIs.

Jones was first promoted from the minor leagues to the Giants in 2017.
