BOONE — The Watauga volleyball team beat visiting North Iredell and visiting Lake Norman in a non-conference tri-match held at Lentz-Eggers Gym Sept. 7.
The Pioneers (8-0) beat North Iredell 25-20, 25-12, 21-25, 25-15 and beat Lake Norman 25-11, 25-21, 25-17. Watauga has won 38 straight regular-season matches dating back to 2017, which is when North Iredell beat the Pioneers in straight sets.
Watauga is 50-2 in its regular-season matches since 2017 and 55-4 overall in matches that include the playoffs. Watauga also has a 45-match winning streak in Northwestern Conference matches.
Watauga’s top two hitters made sure that a loss to North Iredell (4-2) would not happen on Sept. 7. Brooke Byrd led the Pioneers’ offense with 22 kills and five service aces, while fellow senior Rebekah Farthing finished with 21 kills. Farthing, who has committed to play collegiately at Georgia Southern, added 14 digs and four blocked North Iredell kill attempts.
Watauga setter Brelyn Sturgill handed out 51 assists against North Iredell.
Defensively, Watauga got 25 digs from Chloe Baldwin, while Sturgill finished with 15 digs. Freshman Caroline Farthing added 12 digs and five kills, fellow freshman Brooke Scheffler blocked six North Iredell kill attempts and Tegan Allan blocked five.
Rebekah Farthing finished with 14 kills and Byrd had 13 in the Pioneers’ win over Lake Norman (4-3). Sturgill dished out 34 assists and had 11 digs, while Baldwin finished with 12 digs and four service aces.
Scheffler had five blocks and three kills, while the other Farthing had five kills, five service aces and four digs.
Watauga returns to its Northwestern Conference schedule Sept. 9 when it hosts Freedom at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
