BOONE — The High Country Soccer Association will host the first annual High Country Cool Down 5K and 10K road races on Saturday, Aug. 3 in Boone.

The races are designed for the casual jogger, casual walker or the competitive runner. The proceeds will be used to help pay for the resurfacing of the fields at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. The Soccer Complex is owned and managed in a three-way partnership with Appalachian State Men’s and Women’s Soccer, High Country Soccer Association, and Watauga County Parks and Recreation.

The 10K will start at 9 a.m. and the 5K will start at 9:15 am. There will also be a 1-mile fun run for kids aged 9-years-old and younger beginning at 8:30 am. Both races will start and end at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.

The course map uses much of the Greenway Trail and the Watauga High School property.

Race registration includes a race t-shirt (guaranteed if registered by July 9) as well as post-race bananas and waters. Other activities, such as small-sided pickup soccer games for kids, will be offered throughout the morning. Concessions and coffee will also be available for purchase.

Check-in and race-day packet pickup starts at 8 a.m. After the races are held, the awards presentation is at 9:45 a.m. Several age groups, including 9-under, 10-14 years old, 15-19 years old, 20-29 years old, 30-49 years old, 50-64 years old and 65-over for both men and women will be eligible for awards for those who finish in first, second and third place.

The entry fees for the 5K before July 10 is $25, which includes a guaranteed t-shirt. Early registration from July 10-Aug. 2 is $30. A t-shirt is probably, but not guaranteed. Race-day registration is $35 with only leftover t-shirts available.

The entry fees for the 10K before July 10 is $30 with a t-shirt guaranteed. The 10K entry fee for those registering between July 10-Aug. 2 is $35 with the t-shirt being probable, but not guaranteed. Race day registration is $40 and only leftover t-shirts will be available.

The one-mile fun run is free, but does not include a t-shirt. Leftover t-shirts will be available for purchase.

Payments by cash or check must be received by the deadline dates at the High Country Soccer office. Registration must include shirt size with mailed or dropped off payments. Dogs, skateboards or bicycles will not be allowed on the racecourse, but walkers are welcome.
