BOONE — Cailey Haas received the Hall of Fame Award and Jackson Greene won the Trail Blazer Award June 4 at Watauga High School.
The Hall of Fame Award is given to the top female athlete and the Trail Blazer Award is given to the top male athlete at Watauga High School for the 2018-19 school year.
Haas was a standout in girls’ basketball and girls’ soccer. Greene stood out in football and boys’ basketball.
Haas played point guard for Watauga’s girls’ basketball team, which finished 17-11 overall, 10-4 in the Northwestern Conference. She was third on the team in scoring with 10.2 points per game and 2.1 assists per game. Haas also averaged 2.9 steals, 2.5 rebounds per game and shot 43 percent from the field.
Haas also took over the goalkeeping chores for the Watauga girls’ soccer team once the basketball season was over. She helped Watauga to a 17-5 record and a berth in the third round of the state 3-A playoffs.
Haas also made 47 saves and allowed just 10 goals in 18 games. That included a save on a penalty kick.
Greene, who will play in the East-West All-Star Football Game in July, was named the Northwestern Conference Player of the Year in football. He took over the quarterbacking duties for Anderson Castle, who broke his wrist on the third play of the season.
Greene, who was also one of the starting safeties for the Pioneers, ran for 649 yards and scored six touchdowns in six games as the starter. He also completed 58.1 percent of his passing while throwing for 612 yards and seven touchdowns.
Defensively, Greene also made 73 tackles, three for a loss. He also intercepted five passes and recovered two fumbles. He will walk-on to play football at Appalachian State.
Greene played point guard for the Watauga boys’ basketball team once the Pioneers were done playing football. He averaged 1.7 points and 1.4 rebounds coming off the bench for the Pioneers.
