First day of spring practice

New Appalachian State head football coach Eliah Drinkwitz directs the Mountaineers’ first 2019 spring practice.

NEW ORLEANS – Appalachian State football coach Eliah Drinkwitz will be joined by junior quarterback Zac Thomas and senior defensive back Josh Thomas for Sun Belt Media Day, which takes place July 21-22 in New Orleans.

Sun Belt Media Day begins Sunday, July 21, with the Sun Belt Fais-DoDo taking place at Mardi Gras World. Monday, July 22, will see the formal portion of media day begin at 9 a.m. in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. New Sun Belt Commissioner Keith Gill will give his state of the conference address Monday morning at 9:30 a.m.

According to a schedule posted by the Sun Belt Conference, ASU’s media session will take place from 12-12:25 p.m.

The formal media day event will be streamed online at ESPN3.com.

The head coaches of all 10 Sun Belt institutions will be joined by two student-athletes each.

Josh Thomas, a senior from Montgomery, Ala., was a team captain in 2018 and second-team all-Sun Belt from PFF College who had 43 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and four interceptions in 2018.

Zac Thomas, a junior from Trussville, Ala., finished 2018 with a 62.6 passing percentage, throwing for 2,039 yards and 21 touchdowns against six interceptions, adding 92 rushes for 504 yards and 10 touchdowns. Thomas was named MVP of the 2018 New Orleans Bowl, where he also caught a touchdown pass from Malik Williams.
