MORAVIAN FALLS — The Watauga girls’ basketball team fell behind Wilkes Central early and never could catch the Eagles in Watauga’s 50-38 loss Dec. 4.

Wilkes Central took a 15-0 lead before Watauga’s Brelyn Sturgill scored the Pioneers’ first basket with 3:08 left in the first quarter. Brooke Byrd followed with a 3-point basket to leave the Pioneers (0-2) behind 15-5 at the end of the first quarter, but Wilkes Central took a 26-16 halftime lead and never looked back.

Watauga stayed even with Wilkes Central in the third quarter and was outscored by the Eagles 14-12.

Byrd led the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points and was the only Pioneer who finished in double figures in scoring. Tara Lipford added six points on two 3-point baskets.

Malaya Cowles, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, led Wilkes Central with 21 points and 16 rebounds. She also blocked six shots. Makenna Freeman and Jacklyn Richardson each scored seven.

Wilkes Central boys 82, Watauga 54

MORAVIAN FALLS — Wilkes Central raced to an early 17-point lead and cruised to an 82-54 victory over visiting Watauga Dec. 4.

Wilkes Central (3-0) claimed a 21-5 lead and took a 24-12 advantage by the end of the first quarter. The Eagles doubled their score and their lead by outscoring Watauga 24-11 in the second quarter to lead 48-13 at halftime.

Wilkes Central got 17 points from Zamian Gywn, one of four Eagles to score in double figures. The Eagles got 35 points from their bench, including 14 points from sophomore Daylon Banks.

Watauga got 12 points from Blane St. Clair, who led all scorers.

The Watauga boys’ and girls’ basketball teams play at Avery on Dec. 7.

Middle school basketball

BOONE — Hardin Park girls beat Parkway 17-15, while Hardin Park boys beat Parkway 38-11 Dec. 4 in middle school basketball.

In girls’ games played Dec. 3, Green Valley beat Mabel 35-31, Parkway beat Bethel 34-13, Hardin Park beat Cove Creek 34-11 and Blowing Rock beat Valle Crucis 33-10.

In girls’ game played Dec. 3, Valle Crucis beat Blowing Rock 45-25, Bethel beat Parkway 42-34, Hardin Park beat Cove Creek 61-10 and Green Valley beat Mabel 39-36.
