Johnson to play basketball in U.K.

Former Appalachian State men’s basketball player Tyrell Johnson (32) will play professionally for the Plymouth Raiders of the British Basketball League.

BOONE — Former Appalachian State forward Tyrell Johnson has inked a professional deal with the Plymouth Raiders of the British Basketball League.

Johnson will join the Raiders later this summer before the season tips in September.

The BBL features 12 teams from England and Scotland and is the highest basketball league in Great Britain.

In his App State career, Johnson appeared in 125 games, starting in 91. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.0 rebounds in his career and blocking a total of 121 shots. Johnson’s 121 blocks sits fifth all-time in program history, while his 125 games played sits in a tie for fifth-place all-time.

During his senior season in 2018-19, he averaged a career-high 9.0 points in 31 games (14 starts) and also pulled down a career-high tying 4.1 rebounds. Johnson also shot a career-high 48 percent from the field and finished with 28 blocks.

During the 2018-19 season, Johnson scored in double figures in six straight games from Jan. 31 to Feb. 21. He poured in a season-high 20 points two times, including a 20-points, six-rebound and two-block effort in a win over Howard on Dec. 4.
