Outland Trophy list

Appalachian State offensive tackle Victor Johnson (75) was named to the preseason Outland Trophy list. The Outland Trophy is given to the top lineman in the country.

BOONE — Appalachian State senior linebacker Jordan Fehr has been selected to the preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which recognizes the top defender in college football each year.

Appalachian State senior Victor Johnson has also been named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy, which is given annually to the top lineman in college football.

Listed at No. 33 overall and No. 3 among FBS linebackers on the 2019 “Freaks List” from The Athletic, Fehr had 86 tackles and a team-high 5.5 sacks in 2018 for a defense that ranked fourth nationally by allowing just 15.5 points per game. Fehr averaged 8.6 tackles during the seven Sun Belt Conference games in which he was fully available last season, highlighted by a three-sack game at Coastal Carolina and a 15-tackle performance at Arkansas State.

Fehr is the lone Sun Belt player to make the Nagurski Trophy watch list.

Johnson started at left tackle in each of the previous three seasons and made the All-Sun Belt Conference first team each of the last two years. Named the league’s best pass blocker by Lindy’s, he’s the most experienced member on an offensive line that has ranked in the top 25 nationally in both rushing yards per game and fewest sacks allowed for the last five years.

Johnson has made 38 starts since he started his first game as a redshirt freshman at Tennessee in the 2016 opener, and he’s one of eight offensive tackles from a Group of Five conference program to be included on the 2019 watch list for the Outland Trophy. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award — ends are not eligible.
