BOONE — Appalachian State kicker Michael Rubino announced he will transfer to North Carolina to play his senior season.

Rubino made his announcement on Twitter March 26.

“Officially headed to UNC next fall to attend grad school and play my final year of eligibility,” Rubino tweeted.

Rubino will use a graduate transfer. He redshirted in 2015 after attending Middle Creek High School in Apex.

Rubino handled the kickoff chores for Appalachian State. He had 49 touchbacks in 85 kickoffs in 2018, but did not attempt any extra points or field goals.

He also kicked off in 2017 and made 9-of-15 field goals. Rubino also converted 21-of-23 extra points. His 31-yard field goal with 7:24 left in the game gave App State a 23-20 win over Idaho.

In 2016, Rubino made the go-ahead 39-yard field goal that was the difference in Appalachian State’s 31-28 win over Toledo in the Camellia Bowl.
