BOONE — Appalachian State University’s Athletics Department is currently investigating video footage of multiple student-athletes apparently engaging in a fight the weekend of March 16 and 17.

A two-minute-long video of the fight was posted to the r/appstate subreddit on Reddit Wednesday, March 20. The post, titled “St. Patrick’s day football team scuffle,” shows video taken on a cellphone from the second floor during a house party.

The video shows the fight starting at a corner of the room before spreading through the crowd, with fists flying.

ASU Athletics released a statement following the release of the footage.

“We are aware of an incident involving our student-athletes,” the statement read. “We are proactively handling matters, with some student-athletes being suspended from team activities pending further investigation of facts and details.”

Associate Athletics Director for Strategic Communications Joey Jones said the names of the athletes suspended will not be released at this time, adding that they will be “just sticking to this statement for now.” Jones did not say how many are currently suspended or being investigated.

According to Major Kelly Redmon of the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office, no reports relating to the fight have been filed as of March 21.

According to Appalachian State’s student-athlete handbook, student-athletes can face sanctions including suspensions and removal from their team if they commit acts that reflect poorly on the school.
