Gardner-Webb returns to Boone in 2023

BOONE — Appalachian State filled two dates of its future schedules by adding The Citadel and Gardner-Webb.

Appalachian State will host former Southern Conference rival The Citadel on Sept. 24, 2022. The Mountaineers play the Bulldogs one week after playing at Marshall on Sept. 17.

Appalachian State opens the 2022 season at home against North Carolina on Sept. 3 and plays at Texas A&M Sept. 10 before traveling to Marshall.

Appalachian State opens its 2023 season Sept. 2 by hosting Gardner-Webb.

The Mountaineers follow with a road game at North Carolina, a home game with East Carolina and a road game at Wyoming.

Appalachian State last played The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. in 2013, losing 31-28 in overtime. The Bulldogs have won the last two games against App State, having beaten the Mountaineers 52-28 at Kidd Brewer Stadium in 2012.

Appalachian State blasted Gardner-Webb 72-7 Sept. 22 last season. It was the second of four straight blowouts that included victories over Charlotte (45-9), the Runnin Bulldogs, South Alabama (52-7) and Arkansas State (35-9). App State outscored those four opponents by a combined 204-32 score.
