Tough to be a quarterback

Appalachian State’s Devin Stringer (28) and Okon Godwin hit Old Dominion quarterback David Washington during their game on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016.

BOONE — Appalachian State Athletics is asking fans to wear white to its Sept. 7 home football game against the Charlotte 49ers.

The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Mountaineers last hosted a white-out at Kidd Brewer Stadium for the 2016 home opener against Old Dominion, which resulted in a 31-7 ASU victory.

Last year marked the first matchup between ASU and Charlotte, whose campuses are separated by just over 100 miles. The Mountaineers defeated the 49ers in Charlotte by a final score of 45-9. The two schools recently announced four more future matchups scheduled from 2026-29.

ASU will go into the 2019 season with new head coach Eliah Drinkwitz following an 11-2 season, which included a 30-19 victory over Louisiana to claim the 2018 Sun Belt Conference Championship and a 45-13 victory in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl over Middle Tennessee State.
