Boone Town Council action to recently review the possibility of changing one of five local streets — or a possible exception for the limited renaming of a state-maintained road — after Martin Luther King Jr. has met with some expected and extensive community discourse.
Running the gamut from quick and costly prohibitions by local businesses to considering a suitable and prominent thoroughfare for the famed civil rights pioneer, others have broached the name itself. Asks, at least one Watauga Democrat Facebook comment, why not honor a North Carolina son — such as Billy Graham?
