Protecting those that can’t protect themselves can be a full-time job — but even when it’s not, it’s a job that requires serious fundraising. And so, hats off to Blowing Rock festival organizers, nearly five dozen dog owners and the High Country community for a record-setting K-9 Keg Pull during WinterFest 2019.

A record 59 dogs were registered in this year’s event with the overall winner being Partners! Canines, an organization that rescues dogs (and occasionally cats) from kill shelters or unsafe environments — including natural disasters.

Although the proceeds from the event were split evenly with half going to the animal nonprofit organization, 100 percent of the fun was had by those who were able to attend or participate in the Jan. 26 event.

With the cost of transportation and medical care for just one dog approaching $50, every dollar the organization can raise goes toward one more animal saved.

Kudos to WinterFest organizers for taking on the keg pull this year. We hope to see this event fetch even more records as it grows along with one of the High Country’s premier festivals.
