One simple gesture, multiplied by hundreds, can go a long, long way.

Across our community, more than 300 households and businesses participated April 27 in A Simple Gesture of the High Country, a commitment to fill a special green back with nonperishable items for pickup and disbursement to those in need of food across the High Country. Together, those simple gestures generated nearly 10,000 pounds of food to help our neighbors in need.

Of course, while the gesture is, indeed, simple, it doesn’t come about without a significant community effort and involvement.

Not only does the program require those willing to fill the bags, but those willing to volunteer to help pick up the bags from homes and businesses, and those able to unload and sort the products.

But for all this, it’s a mission off to great success. The challenge now is to keep it going.

The next pickup day is June 22 — plenty of time to commit to filling a bag or helping on the delivery end.
