A simple way to end hunger in the High Country?

That’s the hope of the Hunger & Health Coalition and the driving force behind its inspired new program, A Simple Gesture.

The idea — a continuous food drive — truly is simple. You, your household or your office mates agree to an easy promise — to pick up just one extra nonperishable item when you shop for your regular groceries. That item then goes into a reusable green grocery bag you’ve gotten from the HHC, and once every two months a volunteer driver comes by to pick up the now-filled bag you’ve left outside your door. An empty bag is left behind for your use during the next two months.

Of course, fueling this simple program is a commitment from the community — you can sign up to make that commitment or otherwise help at www.hungerandhealthcoalition.com — and a team of volunteers to pick up and sort the groceries.

A Simple Gesture is a straightforward, uncomplicated way to help fight hunger in Watauga County. We won’t go as far as saying it’s a piece of cake — because cake isn’t an example of a nonperishable item that would go in your bag.

But it is about as easy as it can get.

Shop, fill, repeat and hunger is no more.

What could be simpler than that?
