How about this item for your January to-do list: Become a hero.

January is national mentoring month, a time to spotlight those who actively work in our community to create supportive relationships with young people.

In Watauga and surrounding counties, much of that work is done through volunteers with Western Youth Network. Indeed, those volunteers gave more than 4,700 hours of donated time at a worth of more than $115,000 to our community in 2018 alone.

These are the types of commitments that create heroes to our youths in need of such attention — men and women willing to offer consistent and positive examples to young people who might otherwise start off on a wrong foot.
