Using knowledge to change the world around us — a sentiment not only noble, but attainable and certainly fitting to be heard from the stage as Watauga High School’s Class of 2019 turned their tassels during a graduation ceremony June 14.

To that class: Know that the desire to change the world is not unique to you — generations of graduates have felt this way. And better, look around you. In Watauga County, many are achieving this goal daily.

The spirit of changing the world, of making it a better place, is not just a dream. It has become the reality of Samaritan’s Purse, Wine To Water and myriad other local businesses, nonprofits and educational institutions.

It is a dream that is feeding the hungry and housing the homeless, providing medicine and care to those in need. It is building electronic components for rockets and changing the way we conduct business at the cash register.

It is a dream that turns challenges into change, passions into production.

Now, it is your dream, Class of 2019.

Through hard work, vision and, yes, knowledge, it is a dream you will make come true.
