CALDWELL — One man fled to Watauga where he was later detained after allegedly shooting his half-brother in the Globe area of Caldwell County, according to officials.
The Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office stated on June 23 that deputies were dispatched at approximately 7:24 p.m. on June 22 to a shooting in the 5600 block of Anthony Creek Road in the Globe community of Caldwell County. CCSO, Collettsville Fire and Rescue and Caldwell County EMS responded to the scene.
When deputies arrived, they found 55-year-old Larry Milton Gragg dead. Subsequently, Watauga County Sheriff’s Office deputies were notified of a “be on the lookout” for the alleged shooting suspect — Richard Lee Crump, 56, of Lenoir. WCSO deputies waited in Blowing Rock to watch for the Toyota truck described in the BOLO, according to a WCSO shift report.
CCSO Lt. Shelly Hartley said that the two half-brothers were at their parents’ home when an argument ensued. Both Crump and Gragg lived in the area where the altercation took place, he added.
While deputies were looking for the Toyota truck, Crump and a woman who was with him arrived at WCSO with a firearm, and detention staff later convinced the two to put down the handgun. Both Crump and the woman were detained at the request of CCSO and deputies watched them for several hours while awaiting the arrival of an investigator, according to the shift report. Officials in both counties stated they were unsure why Crump traveled to the WCSO.
Hartley stated that the woman with Crump was his wife, and she was later released and not given any charges. A WCSO deputy transported Crump back to Caldwell County.
Crump was arrested and charged with murder. He had his first court appearance on June 24 and as of June 26 remained in the Caldwell County Detention Center with no bond, Hartley said.
