DEEP GAP — A driver and his passenger were transported to Watauga Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries on July 1 after a truck collided with their vehicle.
The Deep Gap Fire Department, Watauga Medics and N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to the scene in the area of U.S. 421 and Access Road around 12:40 p.m.
NCSHP Trooper R.J. Abshear said Tony Michael Ray, 71, of Boone, was driving a 2017 GMC pickup and was traveling on the highway toward Boone when he attempted to make a left turn onto Access Road. Larry Bernard McNeill, 69, of Lansing, was driving a 2001 Ford pickup in the opposite direction when Ray was making his turn.
The two vehicles crashed into each other, causing McNeill’s vehicle to land in the grass off of the road’s shoulder and Ray’s vehicle coming to rest in the roadway. Abshear said that both vehicles had sustained heavy damage — the GMC having front-end damage and the Ford with left-side damage — and airbags deployed with both.
McNeill and his passenger were both transported to Watauga Medical Center. Ray had minor injuries but was not transported, and he was cited with failure to yield right of way.
