Snowy blast causes multiple wrecks on Highway 105

Some of the coldest air of the season, combined with moderate moisture, led to snowy conditions in portions of the High Country on Monday morning, Jan. 20, especially in areas at approximately 4,000 feet in elevation. Emergency personnel responded to multiple incidents on N.C. Highway 105 near the Avery/Watauga county line of vehicles sliding off the highway and into ditches, with conditions treacherous enough to cause a Linville Volunteer Fire Department vehicle to slide off the highway and into a ditch (pictured, right). Multiple authorities responded to incidents, including local police personnel and agencies that included Banner Elk Volunteer Fire and Rescue and Linville Volunteer Fire Department. Additional emergency and fire personnel from Watauga County also helped assist motorists on the scene (pictured left).
