Mountain City-based Maymead Inc. is planning to open an asphalt plant at 5251 U.S. 421 South in Boone to support paving operations for the U.S. 221 widening project, the company's president confirmed Monday.

The proposed site is located east of Boone, about a half-mile south of the intersection with North Pine Run Road. Maymead operates about a dozen asphalt plant and quarry facilities in east Tennessee and Western North Carolina, including one on N.C. 105 South in Boone.

I think its more than the asphalt plant though. I would venture a good guess to say they are angling towards a quarry there to support the plant. All you have to do is look at their other locations. Almost all their asphalt plants have quarries attached, and why else would you have the option to purchase 104 acres if all you need is enough room for an asphalt mixing plant. If you think an asphalt plant looks bad, imagine a quarry.

"Some citizens would have concerns" about placing an asphalt plant on a scenic highway named after two of WNC's most cherished people. Yes, that's about right!
