An Appalachian State University student was killed in a two-car accident on N.C. 105 near Dogwood Road Thursday evening, said the Boone Police Department.

Jacob Dylan Whitaker, 21, of Wake Forest, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, 21-year-old Jonathan Dylan Reeder, of Sherills Ford, refused medical treatment.

The accident occurred when Reeder, who was driving a white SUV, crossed the center line, striking Whitaker, said Capt. Andy Le Beau of the BPD.

The accident is still under investigation, he said.

Rescue personnel from the Boone Fire Department and other agencies responded to the accident shortly after 7:30 p.m. Traffic in both directions of the highway were detoured as crews tended to the accident.

There were no other occupants in either vehicle, according to a news release.

No charges have been filed at this time.

Whitaker was a senior chemistry major, according to the university’s student directory.
