BOONE — Thursday night’s, Oct. 22, Appalachian State University football game proved to be a busy and problematic night for campus police and area law enforcement, but it wasn’t for the reasons they might have expected.

Instead of solely responding to reports of underage drinking or other general mischief, authorities had more than one fire to put out as the Mountaineers rolled to victory over Georgia Southern 31-13.

During the early evening hours, authorities were dispatched to Trivette Hall on campus in reference to a smoke alarm. Upon arrival, the Boone Fire Department noticed smoke and then a small fire in the AppCard student ID office in the downstairs floor of the building, according to campus police shift reports.

Authorities believe the fire originated from inappropriately installed light fixtures.

The fire caused $10,000 in damage, said campus police.

About that same time, campus police and the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office received an entirely different distress call, as reports emerged that someone had stolen an ambulance and was driving away from campus, reports stated.

A few minutes later, the driver of a separate ambulance stated they had passed the stolen unit on N.C. 105 near the bypass.

Deputies began their patrol of the area of highway near Broadstone Road. The stolen ambulance was eventually located in the Cottages of Boone on Fallview Lane, police say.

ASU police had the vehicle towed to the Boone Police Department to be processed. A K-9 officer was used to track suspects, but lost the scent, according to reports.

The investigation is ongoing.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.

Anyone with information on this crime or any other crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (828) 268-6959, (828) 737-0125 or the ASU Police Department at (828) 262-2150.
