This Friday at the Jones House, mercury isn’t rising; it’s swinging.

Jazz takes the porch for June 13’s Summer Concert at the Jones House, with performances from the Mercury Dames and Swing Guitars.

The Mercury Dames, featuring Kim France, Lauren Hayworth and Kappa Hobbs, will start the show at 5 p.m.

“The Mercury Dames feature really clever arrangements, great three-part harmony singing and tasteful accompaniment,” concerts organizer Mark Freed said. “They bring the entire package and have a solid repertoire to go with it.”

According to France, the Dames draw their inspiration from female performers of yesteryear.

“Lauren Hayworth, who is our soprano singer … always wanted to form a female vocal trio,” France said in a previous interview, mentioning iconic groups like The Boswell Sisters and The Andrews Sisters. “I listen to and play a lot of jazz on my own, so I took some songs that were formerly standard vocal numbers and arranged them so we could do them with three-part harmony.”

Swing Guitars will deliver a different sort of harmony. Featuring area jazz luminaries Andy Page, James Schaller and Jay Brown on guitars and Ben McPherron on upright bass, the band celebrates the guitar-driven jazz made popular by Django Reinhardt.

“All of the group’s members are busy with other gigs and jobs, and they only get together a few times a year,” Freed said. “We have a lot of old-time country music played around here. What these guys do is kind of the old-time string band sounds in the jazz genre.”

“There are no horns or drums, but the three guitars and bass provide all the drive and excitement,” Page said in a previous interview. “It’s really fun to play. We love to share this valuable music with visitors to Boone and our hometown crowd.”

The concert will take place rain or shine, and patrons are encouraged to bring their own chair or blanket.

The 2014 Summer Concerts at the Jones House series is sponsored by the Downtown Boone Development Association, Farmers Rentals & Power Equipment, Footsloggers, Mast General Store, Melanie’s, M-Prints and Stick Boy Bread Co.
