Leading up to the opening day of the Watauga County and other farmers’ markets, Greening My Plate Month is a time to celebrate spring and the growing season. Organized by the Watauga Food Council, this year features a lot of unique events. Details can be found at

Movies at the Museum with Sheri Castle

  • When: On Thursday, April 4, from 6–7 p.m.
  • Where: Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, 159 Ginny Stevens Lane, Blowing Rock
  • About: Join Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture in welcoming an award-winning food writer Sheri Castle, who will invite us to consider what it means to be a “Locavore” and why this choice matters. To provide context for this conversation, we will be watching and discussing themes from the Lexicon of Food series presented by PBS and created by the Lexicon of Sustainability project. The selected short films encourage us to think about how food can have a sense of place, and why we might care about where exactly the food that we eat comes from. According to Castle, “The mountain terrain and climate form the history, heart and soul of Blue Ridge food traditions. It’s what distinguishes Appalachian food from Southern food.”

Earth First Friday at the Jones House

  • When: On Friday, April 5, from 5–6 p.m.
  • Where: The Jones House, 604 W King St., Boone
  • About: Join us in celebrating the resilience of our community through trees, bees, music and a whole lot of fun at the Jones House. We will have local food samples and a table with information on ways to purchase local food and beverages during the upcoming growing season.

Boone Winter Farmers’ Market

  • When: On Saturday, April 6, from 9 a.m.–noon.
  • Where: Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center, 252 Poplar Grove Road, Boone
  • About: Some of the foods you can find there include; locally raised meats, eggs and honey as well as…homemade jellies, jams, breads, baked items, handcrafted skincare, candles, photography, toys, bird feeders, children’s books and unique crafts. The market is indoors with parking available in front and rear of building. Live music, Hatchet coffee and hot cocoa is provided.

April Gathering: BRWIA Happy Hour at The New Public House

  • When: On Tuesday, April 9, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Local Food Trivia at Lost Province Brewing Company

  • When: On Wednesday, April 10, from 7– 10 p.m.

Eggstravaganza Kid’s Activities at F.A.R.M. Café

Guided Museum Tour: “Farm, Forage, Feast: High Country Foodways”

  • When: On Tuesday, April 16, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
  • About: Enjoy coffee with the curator at Blowing Rock History and Art Museum through this guided High Country Foodways exhibit. Free for members and $5 for nonmembers, with coffee and cookies included.

Local Lunch at F.A.R.M. Café

High Country Food Hub Restaurant Tour at Reid’s Café

  • When: On Thursday, April 18, from 6-7 p.m.
  • Where: Reid’s Café, 4004 NC-105 #8, Sugar Mountain
  • About: Each dinner will feature local ingredients crafted into delicious menus designed by local chefs. Participants will hear stories from the three-featured local farmers about their craft and why small-scale agriculture plays such an important role in the High Country. Using food to bring people together, this dinner series will be sure to educate, inspire, and delight. This third meal will highlight the fresh flavors of spring with a special four-course meal designed, prepared, and hosted by Reid’s Cafe.

Growing Vegetables in Containers Workshop

  • When: On Thursday, April 25, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Where: The Watauga Agricultural Conference Center, 252 Poplar Grove Road, Boone
  • About: Do you lack space to garden, do you rent your home, or are the deer eating your garden? Then growing vegetables in containers may be your solution. Come learn what vegetables can grow well in containers, how to pick the right size container, the type of soil to use, and how to get the plants started. The class will conclude with everyone starting their own lettuce container garden to take home to grow. There is a $10 fee to cover the cost of pots, soil and seedlings, and will be collected the day of the class. If you wish to observe class without creating a container garden to take home, there is no charge.

Feasting on Farm Fresh Ingredients Cooking Classes

  • When: On Wednesday, May 1 and 8, from 5-7:30 p.m.
  • Where: The Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center, 252 Poplar Grove Road, Boone
  • About: Join this dinner time in celebration for kicking off the local food season and learn how to fill your plate with delicious farm fresh ingredients. Using inspiration from local food producers, we will create delicious dishes from appetizer to dessert, and then have a wonderful dinner.
  • Classes will be led by Extension agent (nutrition and foods) Margie Mansure and Extension agent (livestock) Eddy Labus.
