Deep Gap teen wins NC poetry competition

Melanie Kershaw, 13, won first place in the Mary Chilton Award given by the North Carolina Poetry Society on Saturday, May 11. Kershaw was presented the award at their annual awards day celebration at the Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities in Southern Pines. The contest was open to all students of North Carolina. Kershaw received the award for her poem entitled “Reflection,” which can be read in the N.C. Poetry Society’s publication “Pinesong.” Melanie is in eighth grade, and both she and her sister, Natalie, attend homeschool.
