BLOWING ROCK — A hotter-than-usual Memorial Day weekend greeted tourists, part-time residents and locals on a busy weekend in Blowing Rock, with the 57th season of Art in the Park taking center stage on Park Avenue on Saturday, May 25.

With more than 95 artists lining up along the road selling a wide variety of art, the crowds made the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce’s Loni Miller happy, despite occasionally dodging raindrops.

At noon, Miller and Chamber staff went out to award the top four artists of the day. The two honorable mention awards went to Katherine Hanes of Durham and Nita Forde of Penland.

The second-place Award of Distinction went to William Jones of Greensboro and the first-place Award of Excellence went to Jessie Benson of Willis, Va.

The day wasn’t just for artists, as dozens of dogs and their owners made their way down Park Avenue, a more-common occurrence at the event in recent years.

Boy Scout Troop 100 of Boone sold hot dogs and drinks while dancers from High Country Dance Studio put on a performance to help fund their trip to nationals on Labor Day weekend.
