WEST JEFFERSON — The Ashe County Arts Council is going off the main highway with its new exhibition, “Backroads.” The exhibition, which opened Wednesday, July 10, will run until Saturday, July 27.
The exhibition is the first to open under new Arts Council Executive Director Jeff Fissel, who replaced Jane Lonon after her June 30 retirement.
“Everything’s been beautiful,” Fissel said. “It has a cool theme, and I loved the last one, too. It was cool just to watch everything get set up, two ladies came in, they eyed everything up, laid it all out — and I don’t have any background with that, so it was cool to watch them decide what was going where and how to group things.”
The exhibit features pieces from artists including Susan Jesperson, Gerry Patterson, Susan Van Wyk, Bill Wysor and Sheryl Roberts.
The next exhibition will be “Studio Tour Artist Exhibit,” which will feature works done by featured artists on the Ashe County Studio Tour.
High Country Writers presented its first Wordsmith awards on July 11. This award is for excellence in writing, and nominees were chosen by their peers in the club based on criteria set by HCW in fiction, non-fiction and poetry. This year’s winners included Wayne Clawson, Diane Blanks, Mar Startari and Bart Bare.
