Support Local Journalism in Watauga County
The Watauga Democrat has been dedicated to local journalism in Watauga County, North Carolina, since 1888. We’re proud to be the oldest continuously operating business in the county, and we’re proud to be the most comprehensive, accurate and ethical source of news in our area.
For most of our history, our readers have paid a small fee for the services we provide — just like they pay for phone, cable and Internet. Today, thanks to modern technologies, more people than ever before are reading the Watauga Democrat, and many are reading for free on our digital platforms.
But it takes significant resources for Mountain Times Publications’ 11 full-time journalists to provide high quality reporting in the High Country. That’s why we ask you to join our advertisers and print subscribers in supporting local journalism with your dollar.
We hear from readers who want to pay for the service they’re using, but prefer to receive their news on digital platforms, and not in print. This is your opportunity. The Watauga Democrat does not have a paywall, but your financial support will help sustain these services that you use to inform your decisions and engage with your community — and that are essential to preserving democracy.
Please note that the Watauga Democrat is not a charity, will not use your support for charitable programs, and your support of the Watauga Democrat’s journalism does not constitute a charitable donation. As such your contribution is not eligible to be treated as a charitable deduction for federal or state taxes in the United States or elsewhere.
