VILAS — Janet Shoaf of St. Petersburg, Fla., shared photos with the Watauga Democrat of an adult black bear and three cubs at her family's vacation cabin in Vilas last week.

"Our neighbor on a higher hill first reported seeing this mama and her three cubs on his property attempting to grab his bird feeders," Shoaf said. "Once we arrived from Florida and began hanging our feeders, it didn’t take long for the bears to find our porch and begin claiming our feeders for themselves!"

The mother bear was busy eating deer corn while the babies were on alert, Shoaf said. "Every noise they heard they scampered up the trees!"
