“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.” 2 Timothy 4:3
All you have to do is to change channels on the television or the radio and you will get different stories and mostly different opinions on any given subject. I won’t even get into the “news” aspect of that statement. Say, for instance, the weather; one forecaster will say to take your umbrella because we may get some rain. Another might warn us to take our umbrellas, boots, coats, etc. because it is going to flood. Which one do you prepare for? We can use a like example as we contemplate listening to God’s Word.
In our scripture today Paul commanded Timothy to “preach the word.” Paul stressed this because he knew that a time would come when sinful people would stop listening to the truth and listen only to what they wanted to hear. Paul referred to that as “having itching ears.”
Many people today only want to hear what “feels good” to them, not the truth of God’s Word. As we go through our lives how do our actions today “preach” the truth rather than political correctness? My daily prayer includes praying that I will be faithful to God regardless of what sinful people desire to hear. People may not believe what you say but they will believe what you do. What will you do this week to “preach” God’s Word by your actions? Do your ears itch? Think about it!
