The last trip to the city of Charlotte proved to be a good one for Watauga’s distance runners. They’re hoping that a trip to Charlotte, the university, proves to be the same. Watauga sends two 3,200-meter relay teams and a handful of other runners to the 4A state track meet, which begins today at Belk Stadium at UNCC. The meet goes from today through Saturday. Kristin Stroupe leads the Pioneers by running in the 3,200-relay and the individual 3,200-meter run. Stroupe, who finished third in cross country in the fall, was second in the Western Regional last weekend in the 3,200 run with a time of 11:08.00. She will be joined in that race by teammate Anna Mae Flynn, who finished fourth in the regional with a 11:47.00. Myers Park’s Julia Lucas won the race going away and can be considered one of the favorites to win on Saturday. Watauga’s relay team, which consists of Stroupe, Flynn, Kristin Bowden and Anna Lamm, won the regional race with a time of 9:49.20. Also representing Watauga’s girls’ track team is Ginna Calloway, who qualified for the state meet in the 300-meter hurdles. Calloway, a sophomore, finished with a time of 47.60 seconds. On the boys’ side, Watauga’s 3,200-relay team of John Tumbleston, Elliott Austin, T.J. Kenny and Johnny Newsome won the regional race with a time of 8:02.60. Kenny also qualified for the 800-meter run by taking fourth in the regional and Tumbleston finished second in the 1,600-meter run. Tennis: This weekend is also the finals for the 4A individual tournament, which is in Chapel Hill on Friday and Saturday. Watauga sends David Gora and Tyler Fleming to the round of 16 in singles matches. Gora, Watauga’s No. 1 seeded player all year, finished fourth in the Western Regional and has a 13-4 record. Fleming finished second in the regional and has a 16-2 record playing No. 3 singles for the Pioneers. Watauga's dual team season came to an end Tuesday in a 5-1 loss to powerful Myers Park. Watauga finished with a 14-1 team record. |
