BOONE —App State cornerbacks coach Bryan Brown was promoted to defensive coordinator, and linebackers coach Dale Jones has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator for the Mountaineers. The moves were made by head coach Scott Satterfield on Jan. 8.
“Bryan will continue what we have been doing over the past five seasons at a high level,” Satterfield said in a news release. “He knows exactly what we want to do on that side of the ball, and his track record on our staff speaks for itself. He is a dynamic and talented coach and recruiter, and he is very deserving of this opportunity.”
Brown has coached the Mountaineers’ cornerbacks for the past six years. The Mountaineers have intercepted 56 passes in the past three seasons. Current cornerback Clifton Duck was named to the freshman all-America team in 2016 and finished with a team-leading six interceptions in 2017.
In addition to Duck, Brown has mentored all-conference selections in Tae Hayes (2017), Mondo Williams (2016), Latrell Gibbs (2015) and Demetrius McCray (2012). McCray was a seventh-round pick of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013 and spent three seasons there before playing for the Oakland Raiders this year.
“It’s a blessing and an honor to be given this opportunity,” Brown also said in a news release. “I want to thank Coach Satt for trusting and believing in me to serve as the DC at this great university. We want to continue to build upon the success that we have had defensively, and our defensive staff is up for the challenge.”
Jones enters his 23rd season at Appalachian State, where he has coached defensive line, linebackers and was the special teams coordinator from 1996-2004. Jones was also the Mountaineers’ defensive coordinator from 2010-12. He has been the team’s inside linebackers coach for the past four seasons.
“Dale has given his all for Appalachian State for so many years, and this is a deserving title for what he means to our staff,” Satterfield said. “He will oversee our running game defense and maintain a vital role in developing the young men in our program. We are fortunate to enjoy great continuity and camaraderie among the coaches on our staff.”
The moves were made days after former Appalachian State defensive coordinator Nate Woody finalized a deal to be the new defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. It also comes after App State lost defensive backs, co-defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator Scot Sloan to Georgia Southern.
Appalachian State has already brought in Greg Gasparato to coach on the defensive side of the ball. His specific area has not been announced, although he coached inside linebackers and special teams at Wofford from 2015-17.
