Mr. Robert Logan Breitenstein, 88, of 376 Dr. Perry Drive, Valle Crucis, N.C., died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born July 24, 1913, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Arthur Edward and Laura Kisker Breitenstein.
Mr. Breitenstein was a graduate of Withrow High School and attended Miami of Ohio University. He received a B.A. degree from the University of Cincinnati. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a retired teacher and coach. He coached football at Steubenville (Ohio) High School and Shaker Heights (Ohio) High School, the University of Miami and Appalachian State University.
Mr. Breitenstein was Dean of Men and Athletic Director at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. and Dean of Men at Appalachian State University. He formerly served on the Orange Bowl Committee.
Mr. Breitenstein was originator, owner and director of Camp Broadstone in Valle Crucis.
After retirement, he was an employee of Hound Ears Club as a starter and ranger for 20 years. He was a member of Foscoe Christian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Donna Breitenstein of Valle Crucis and Patricia Zachem and husband, David, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one son, Steven Breitenstein and wife, Sharon, of Valle Crucis; one granddaughter, Amy Tisdale of St. Petersburg; and four grandsons, Steven Zachem and wife, Paula, and Jonathan Zachem, all of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Seth Logan Breitenstein and Eric Breitenstein, both of Valle Crucis.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Remke Breitenstein; and a brother, Jim Breitenstein.
A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the dining hall of Camp Broadstone, with Pastor Kenneth Caswell and minister Lance Hostetter officiating.
The family will receive friends at a reception at Camp Broadstone following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Pass The Torch” Scholarship Fund, in care of Lisa Greene, Bank of America, 1800 Blowing Rock Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.
