Mr. John Daris “J.D.” Turbyfill, 74, of Banner Elk, the Foscoe community, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 7, 2005, at Duke Hospital.
He was born in Avery County, April 21, 1930, a son of the late Ed and Minnie Hicks Turbyfill.
Mr. Turbyfill was retired from Vance Recapping, where he was employed for 35 years. He was a member of the Foscoe Christian Church and was an Army veteran.
Survivors include three daughters, Terri Broadwater and husband, Lanny, Jodie Turbyfill-Mercereau, all of Simpsonville, S.C., and Mitzi T. Creel of Palm Harbor, Fla.; one sister, Bea Davis of Elk Park, N.C.; two brothers, Don Turbyfill of Farmville, Va., and Stewart Turbyfill of Kingsport, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Monique, John-Michael and Matthew Mercereau, Brandi Fletcher, De Dee Smith, and Brett Creel; eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Crouch Turbyfill; his second wife, Margarette Turbyfill; four sisters, Earlene Davis, Irene Thomas, Peggy Rayfield Gardner, Pauline T. Smith, and one infant sister, Georgia Turbyfill; and two infant brothers, Millard and Dayton Turbyfill.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Foscoe Christian Church. Officiating will be Minister Lance Hostetter. Burial will follow in the Heaton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Turbyfill Scholarship Fund, in care of Centura Bank, 671 West King Street, Boone, N.C. 28607.
