Lt. Col. Thomas Gerald Adams, (U.S. Marine Corps, Retired), 70, of Linville Land Harbor, Newland, died Dec. 22, 2004, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

He was born Aug. 9, 1934, in Amsterdam, N.Y., to the late Seymour and Stephanie Kozarewicz Adams.

Mr. Adams was a graduate of S.U.N.Y. in Brockport, N.Y. in 1956 with a B.S. degree in Education and from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. in 1983 with a M.A. degree in Education.

In 1971, he attended the U.S. Army Command & General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and completed a course with Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Adams retired as a Lt. Col. in 1980, after serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 until 1980, including two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He was awarded two bronze star medals with Combat V and two Navy commendation medals.

From 1981 until 1983, he was a graduate student in Administration of Higher Education at A.S.U., after which he served as assistant director of International Studies and China Project, foreign student advisor and instructor of Interdisciplinary Studies. He also taught a course on the Vietnam War.

Mr. Adams was a member of the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs, the N.C. Association for Foreign Student Affairs, serving on the state executive board and the Watauga Chapter of the Retired Officers Association, serving on the Board of Directors.

He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Boone, having served as president, vice-president, district Lt. Governor, a Meals on Wheels volunteer and Cannon Memorial Hospital volunteer.

He was currently secretary-treasurer and a board member of the Boone Kiwanis Scholarship Foundation.

He was “Kiwanian of the Year” in 1981.

He was a former chairman of the board of directors of Valle Crucis Park Association.

Mr. Adams was a former commissioner and assistant district chairman of the Watauga District of the Old Hickory Council of Boy Scouts of America.

He was a member of the district committee and received the district award of merit. He served as president and secretary and as chairman of the board of directors of the Watauga United Way campaign.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Cooper Adams; one daughter, Susan Adams and husband, William Gilsdorf, of Angier, N.C.; one son, Gregory M. Adams and wife, Kristen Derrick, of Hot Springs, N.C.; one brother, Gerald Thomas Adams of Johnstown, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Joan Adams of Gloversville, N.Y.; and a niece, Lorri Sabino and husband, Mike, of Utica, N.Y.

A memorial service will be conducted, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Hal Meador officiating. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
