Mrs. Elsie Howington Hess, 90, of Georges Gap Road, Vilas, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 5, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born in Beckley, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Charles Lee and Goldie Lester Howington.
Mrs. Hess was a homemaker. Survivors include four daughters, Mary Lee Thompson of West Grove, Pa., Frances Presnell Wilcox of Boone, Ellen Dancy and husband, Jack, of Vilas, and Shelba Hicks and husband, Ford, of Mountain City, Tenn.; four sons, Wesley Hess and wife, Mary Della, of Chester County, Pa., Millard Hess and wife, Margie, of Vilas, John Hess and wife, Flora, of Mountain City, and Willis Hess of Vilas; 35 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Lee and Goldie Lester Howington; her husband, Willard Isaac Hess; one son, Donald Hess; six grandchildren; four sisters; and two brothers.
Services will be conducted Friday evening at 8 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Bill McGuire and the Rev. Burl Greer.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30-8 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at the Piney Grove Church Cemetery.
