GYSGT Harold L. Stanbery, U.S. Marine Corp., Retired, 76, of 1671 Ridge Road, Boone, N.C., died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 22, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

He was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Ashland, West Virginia, to the late Lloyd C. and Josie Elizabeth Ray Stanbery.

Mr. Stanbery retired as a Gunnery Sgt. after 20 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corp and was awarded a Purple Heart while serving in the Korean Conflict.

He was a self-employed sawmill operator.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy Norris Stanbery; two daughters, Wilda Koroll of Cornelius and Brenda Lentz and husband, Johnny, of Blowing Rock; four sons, Michael Stanbery and wife, Glenda, David Stanbery, Mark Stanbery and wife, Sandra, and Richard Stanbery, all of Boone; five granddaughters, April Greene and husband, Tim, of Boone, Stephanie Kennedy and husband, Nathan, of Abingdon, Va., Cindy Lentz of Mars Hill, Amber Koroll of Cornelius, and Callie Stanbery of Boone; two grandsons, Adam Stanbery of Boone and Anthony Koroll of Cornelius; two step-grandchildren, Angie Reece and Charlie Reece, both of Boone; three great-grandchildren, Bryan, Hattie Rose and Calvin Greene, all of Boone; two sisters, Mrs. Alta Wilson of Clemmons and Mrs. Beulah Hutton of Indianapolis, Ind.; and two brothers, J.C. Stanbery and wife, Louise, and Blaine Stanbery and wife, Lillian, all of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lloyd and Josie Elizabeth Ray Stanbery; and one sister, Bina Sembell.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Bethelview United Methodist Church. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. at the church. Officiating will be the Rev. Allen Marsh and the Rev. Gerald Hodges. Burial will follow in the Bethelview United Methodist Church Cemetery.
