Mrs. Reka Waddell Shoemake, 92, of Brookside Drive, Boone, died Friday evening, Dec. 17, 2004, at the Davant Extended Care Facility.

She was born in Ashe County, Feb. 19, 1912, a daughter of the late Eugene and Maude Perkins Waddell.

Mrs. Shoemake held both a BS and MS from Appalachian State University in Elementary Education. She taught in both Ashe and Watauga County for 39 years.

Mrs. Shoemake was a member of the Retired Teachers of Watauga County; Alpha Beta Chapter of Alpha Delta Delta Kappa Sorority; the Boone Worthwhile Woman’s Club, and a member of the Fidelis Sunday School at First Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca S. Councill of Boone; one granddaughter, Tracy Councill and husband, Don Ellison, of Takoma Park, Md.; two grandsons, John Councill, Jr. of Boone, and Ben Councill and friend, Tammy Gragg, of Blowing Rock; three great-granddaughters, Amanda Councill of Raleigh, and Grace and Molly Ellison of Takoma Park, Md.; two great-grandsons, Cody Councill of Boone, and Dalton Ward of Blowing Rock; two sisters, Alta Hall of Independence, Va., and Daphene Smith of Charleston, S.C.; two brothers, Roger Waddell of White Hall, Md. and Horace Waddell of Grassy Creek.

In addition to her parents, She was preceded in death by her husband, James Dee Shoemake; four sisters and two brothers.

Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Dr. Wayne Brown, and Dr. George Miles. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the First Baptist Church, 375 West King Street, Boone, N.C. 28607.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home immediately following the funeral service.
