Mr. John Edward Barbato, 66, a resident of Valle Crucis since 2002, died unexpectedly Dec. 8, 2004, at home.
He was born Sept. 8. 1938, in Bridgeport, Conn., to the late Philip John and Catherine Cowan Barbato.
Mr. Barbato had been a resident of Miami, Florida for 46 years before moving to North Carolina.
He was in the mortgage industry for 30 years in both Florida and North Carolina.
He was active in the Kiwanis Youth Land for more than 20 years where he served on the board of directors as well as coaching baseball, football and basketball. He was a member of the Church of The Holy Cross in Valle Crucis.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Stella Skinner Barbato; one daughter, Catherine Fennell and husband, Barry, of Miami; three sons, John Barbato and wife, Melissa, and Tom Barbato and wife, Yvonne, all of Miami and Michael Barbato and wife, Lisa, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, Marie Kost and husband, Bill, of Miami; and one brother, Philip Barbato and wife, Laura, of Coral Springs, Fla. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was conducted Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Caballero-Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel in Miami.
Burial followed in Woodlawn Park Cemetery in Miami. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of The Holy Cross, P.O. Box 645, Valle Crucis, N.C. 28691, for the “Towel Ministry” Fund.
Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of local arrangements.
