BOONE — A leak in an underground storage tank at the Speedway #7921 service station at 2702 N.C. 105 has resulted in a closure of the station since Wednesday, Jan. 31.

“A new petroleum release was detected from the underground storage tank system,” said Laura J. Leonard, public information officer with the N.C. Divisions of Waste Management and Environmental Assistance. “Subsequent to the new release, the owner decided to remove the underground storage tank system, conduct cleanup activities and replace the current system with a new system. Removal and cleanup activities are ongoing with oversight from the Underground Storage Tanks Section (of the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources).”

Watauga Riverkeeper Andy Hill of MountainTrue has been on site taking water samples to determine any impact on water quality.

A call to station owners Marathon Petroleum Corporation in Findlay, Ohio, regarding when the station will reopen, was not returned.
