Checkpoints nets six DWI charges

The Watauga County Sheriff’s Office staged a driving-while-impaired and license checkpoint late Friday night into Saturday morning.

Officers from WCSO, Avery County Sheriff’s Office, Boone Police Department, Appalachian State University Police Department and the N.C. Highway Patrol set up the checkpoint on N.C. 105 at 11 p.m. at the intersection of Church Road in Foscoe. Cars were stopped until 3 a.m.

Throughout the course of the night, six people were charged with driving while impaired, three with driving while license revoked, six for driving without a license, two with possession of drug paraphernalia, two for simple possession of a controlled substance, one failure to carry driver’s license and one for driving without a license plate.

The Watauga chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving was also at the checkpoint to provide the officers with coffee and snacks, donated by Panera Bread.
