Farmers’ market offering up summer green
This Saturday at the Watauga County Farmers' Market, Matt Cooper of Lively Up Farm will have tomatillos, four kinds of potatoes, and fresh basil.
Red Cross announces August blood drives
The Watauga County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold seven blood drives during August, with the first scheduled this Sunday.

Skatepark: 2006-2009
Equipment at the Appalachian Skatepark in Boone is in the process of being removed. All of the items are expected to be removed by this Friday. The park was recently closed by officials and the equipment sold to Ashe County after it was announced a skate park will be opened in Ashe.

Hail to the chief
A reception for retiring Boone Police Chief Bill Post was held Wednesday afternoon at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. More than 100 people from various law enforcement agencies, elected officials and community members gathered to celebrate Post’s 11-year career with the BPD.
Local jobless rate rises; not so with regional rate
Watauga County’s unemployment rate rose in June, though regional unemployment rates decreased last month.
Second man arrested in burglary
The Boone Police Department have charged a Granite Falls man on charges of first degree burglary and felony larceny.
Watauga sheriff’s reports
July 21 — Kisha Nicole Greene, 35, of 392 Morningside Drive, Blowing Rock, was served with a warrant for arrest on a charge of simple physical assault. She is scheduled to appear in district court on Aug. 28 in lieu of a written promise bond.
New repairs scheduled for Parkway bridges
Bridges on the Blue Ridge Parkway will be undergoing routine maintenance in the next couple of months, including some local bridges, though travel delays are expected to be minimal.
Tours open up a day in the life of local agriculture
The best of local agriculture will be showcased in August, with people getting the chance to visit farms and meet the growers who are stocking local restaurants and farmers’ markets. The 2009 High Country Farm Tour will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, and Sunday Aug. 9, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Stops on the self-guided tour are located across Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes counties and in Grayson County, Va.
Boone man arrested on fraud charge
The Boone Police Department has arrested a Boone man suspected of felony financial transaction card fraud. Daniel Fitzgerald Bennett, 23, is alleged to have taken a Visa debit card belonging to an acquaintance. Bennett is accused of using the card at several automated teller machines in the area to withdraw an undisclosed total of cash over a two-week period. Bennett is scheduled to appear in district court on Sept. 15 in lieu of a $2,000 bond.
Crimestoppers: ‘Mule,’ four-wheelers, lawmower stolen
Watauga County Crimestoppers requests the public’s help in identifying the person(s) responsible for the following crime: Sometime between Wednesday evening, July 15, and Thursday evening, July 16, a red Kawasaki Mule, a small Suzuki four-wheeler, a John Deere riding lawnmower and other tools were taken from a barn located off Tater Hill Road in the Zionville community. Anyone with information on this crime or any other crime is asked to call Crimestoppers at 828-268-6959. All information will be kept confidential. Crimestoppers pays rewards for information, which leads to arrests; recovery of stolen property; seizure of drugs; and the location of wanted persons.

Unemployment rates decrease in five High Country counties in June
The month-to-month county unemployment rates in most High Country counties fluctuated only in tenths of 1 percent from May to June — rather than in whole percentage points —and that fact, along with decreases in unemployment in five of the seven counties may indicate that the freefall in local job loss may be leveling off. Farm-City will bloom on a farm (in the city)
Watauga County was a mostly rural county and Dwight D. Eisenhower was president of the United States when the first Farm-City Banquet was held.
Boone Police reports
July 24 — Larceny by shoplifting was reported at 1:03 a.m. at the Wilco Hess on East King Street. A 24-pack of Busch beer was reported stolen.
Sierra Wilson attends FBI National Academy
A High Country teen was selected to attend to this year’s FBI National Academy Associates Youth Leadership Program (YLP) in late June. Sierra Wilson, 15, a rising sophomore at Ashe County High School, was one of 50 students selected from across the nationa to attend the weeklong academy.

Sugar Grove man killed in fire
A Sugar Grove man was killed in a fire Friday night. Neighbors arriving home at 10:45 p.m. called 911 to report a camper on fire at 4827 U.S. 321 North, Sugar Grove.
N.C. Court of Appeals remands case back to Superior Court;
the case continues between Templeton Properties and town of Boone
The N.C. Court of Appeals heard an appeal filed by the town of Boone and the town’s Board of Adjustments (BOA) based on a June 2008 lawsuit heard in Watauga County Superior Court. The lawsuit stems from the denial of a special use permit application filed by Templeton Properties for the renovation of an existing vacant church building into a medical clinic on State Farm Road near VFW Drive.
Widening project begins today
The contractor for the US 421/King Street widening planned to begin work Monday, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation. With utility crews already working to remove or replace lines, contractors will be placing orange construction signs to notify motorists. This will be followed by the demolition of the buildings on the south side of 421.
DBDA’s future continues to top agenda
The Boone Town Council and the Downtown Boone Development Association will be discussing the possibility of a six-month contract after a presentation on the matter by DBDA member Dempsey Wilcox at Thursday’s council meeting.

July 18 — Larceny was reported at 8:02 a.m. at the American Legion. A sign was reported stolen.
Watauga sheriff’s reports
July 18 —Thomas Jason Reynolds, 28, of 3535 Old Union Church Road, Salisbury, was arrested on view on a charge of breaking and entering. He was placed in the Watauga County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in district court on Aug. 28 in lieu of a secured $1,000 bond.
Ashe buys skate park equipment
In an unexpected move in support of Ashe County Parks and Recreation (ACPR), the Ashe County Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of the much-maligned Appalachian Skate Park (ASP) from the ASP Committee in Boone for the sum of $32,600.
