Playing in the Mixed Scrambles with Sharon Holloway, Tom Mackey and John Cousins, Gessner used an eight-iron on her shot. She had said she wanted to get the ball on the green and set up a possible birdie or easy par.
However, after she hit the ball, the rest of her foursome told her she had made a hole-in-one.
“My first reaction was total shock,” she said in a press release. “As I stood there dazed, I still wasn't sure it went in the hole until I heard shouts from my team members ‘Hole in one! Hole in one!’ They rushed over to hug and congratulate me and the excitement grew. All the way to the green I was saying I can't believe it! The reality of what had just happened sunk in when we walked onto the green and I looked down into the cup and there was my now cherished golf ball.”
By the time they finished their last 3 holes, most of the players had already arrived back at the clubhouse. When they arrived, Gessner, who is married to Dr. Max Gessner, the pastor of Cove Creek Baptist Church, was greeted by shouts of praise, congratulations, and lots of hugs from other golfers for achieving the hole in one and becoming a new member of the coveted Hole in One Club.
“I give thanks to the Lord for the good health He has given me and for blessing me with an ability to play golf with friends and my husband, Max, who has been my teacher,” she said.
