Soccer tryouts begin Aug. 3

The Watauga boys’ soccer team will hold tryouts on Aug. 5 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Watauga High School. A sports physical and all necessary soccer equipment is required. Water and soccer balls will be provided.
Bike series continues
BEECH MOUNTAIN — The second and third legs of the Beech Mountain Triple Crown Downhill Race Series take place Aug. 8-9 and Sept. 5-6.
The entry fee is $55 per person, with helmets mandatory for all competitors.

Women’s golf adds pair
Appalachian State women’s golf coach Heather Brown announced the signings of Kristina Boo and Rumbidzai Masamvu.
Boo hails from Hassleholm, Sweden, where she posted an average round score of 81 in high school at Hassleholms Tekniska Skola. Her top finish came in the form of an individual title at the Kristianstad tournament.
Masamvu is a native of Harare, Zimbabwe and ranks among the top golfers in the country. Masamvu, the 2008 Zimbabwe Ladies national stroke play champion was also the 2006-08 champion at her local club.
Bob Light Invitational
The Bob Light Invitational tennis tournament, played at Hound Ears Club July 10-12, benefited Watauga’s prep tennis teams, Lees-McRae’s tennis teams, and Avery Parks and Recreation.
Seventy-five participants were involved. Court sponsors were Ted and Adrienne Finkel, Harold and Wanda Libby, Joe, Linda and Peanut Webster, Harold and Sandi Solomon, and Joan Grady.
