Watauga National

moves on to state

tournament

The Watauga National 13-14-year-old Junior League team plays again Saturday after a mid-week victory.

Watauga National won the District 7 title Wednesday night by beating Wilkes National 11-7 at the Optimist Park in Boone. Watauga lost the opener by a score of 5-2, but bounced back to take the final game, 11-7.

Watauga was led at the plate by Jake Cody’s three hits, Taylor Shufford’s two-run home run and another hit, and two hits each by Ethan Greene and Chris Winkler. Winkler picked up the victory on the mound as the starter.

Watauga National goes on to the state tournament, taking on King at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The outcome of that game determines whether they enter the winner’s bracket later Saturday or play a game in the loser’s bracket Sunday.
